Madison, Wisconsin-based Wellbe raised $1.4 million to expand its web-based patient coordination software Guided CarePath and fund further development, according to a press release.

Undisclosed angel investors in Madison and a few other states contributed $1.1 million to the round and the remaining $300,000 is borrowed from a local city management development corporation, Director of Marketing Maeghan Nicholson told MobiHealthNews.

Guided CarePaths, which exist on a platform called a Patient Guidance System, offers patients a virtual way to understand and navigate joint replacement and sports medicine surgeries. The basis of this system uses education, action lists, monitoring, and communications to help patients through the care process. The product is meant to help the patient from the decision-making process before surgery to a year after the surgery takes place.

Wellbe debuted the Bariatric Surgery Guided CarePath a few weeks ago at Cleveland Clinic’s Medical Innovation Summit. Although this product is made specifically for bariatric and orthopedic surgery programs, Wellbe will use the money to expand into different specialties. Nicholson said the company is currently considering applications in neuro, spine, oncology and women's health.

Butler Health System in Butler, Pennsylvania; Avera McKennan in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and the University of Wisconsin hospital are currently using Guided CarePath in their facilities. Butler Health System is using the technology on iPads in addition to the web version.
