Health Gorilla, a Sunnyvale, California-based company that just released a clinical communication platform, raised $2.4 million from  Data Collective, with additional contributions from True Ventures, Harris Barton, Orfin Ventures and Venture Investment Associates. This brings the company's total funding to $4.4 million.

The recently launched Health Gorilla Clinical Network, a HIPAA-compliant and Meaningful Use Stage 2-certified software platform allows healthcare providers, vendor partners such as lab facilities and clinics, and patients to connect and communicate. Building on Health Gorilla's previous offering, the platform includes electronic ordering of diagnostic tests, and electronic referrals to specialist facilities like sleep clinics, physical therapy centers, and nursing homes.

The secure messaging network allows different members of a patient's care circle to message one another, as well as to share records, test results, and other information. A "health history" function, currently available only in California, will allow patients who use the system to get access to all the medical records accumulated over their lifetime. Patients and providers will be able to access Health Gorilla from an iOS app as well as from a computer.
