MedaCheck raises $1M for its medication reminder tablet device for seniors

MedaCheckCincinnati, Ohio-based MedaCheck, a company that sells a dedicated medication reminder tablet for seniors, has raised $1.1 million in a round led by Queen City Angels.

The tablet aims to help seniors who have trouble managing their medication. When the MedaCheck tablet is purchased, the senior or their caregiver will send MedaCheck a list of all of the user's medications and supplements. From there, MedaCheck will set up the tablet with the medication reminders and ship it to the user. At that point, the user just needs to plug the device into an outlet to start up the program. MedaCheck works over a data connection. 

Seniors will get daily alerts from the tablet that remind them when they need to take their medication. A large photo and instructions will accompany the alert so seniors will understand how to take different medications. Seniors are prompted to press a button on the tablet once they have taken the medication, and if they miss a dose, someone from MedaCheck's team will call to remind them. The user's caregiver, family members, and medical professionals can also receive updates on the user's health.

If seniors are traveling, they will receive a daily call from MedaCheck to ensure they are not having any problems remembering their medication regimen.

The tablet and charger cost $149 and after the first 30 days, users are billed $30 per month.

While the company sells its product directly to consumers, they also partner with healthcare facilities to sell the app.

"MedaCheck sells both directly to consumers -- seniors and caregivers in many cases -- as well as distributor channels such as hospitals, assisted living facilities and senior living facilities, specialty medicine centers, and retail pharmacy," MedaCheck CEO and Founder Jeffrey Shepard told MobiHealthNews in an email. "Selling through distributed sales channels gives MedaCheck partners the opportunity to add value to their existing relationships. We’ve also made sure patient and provider onboarding and integration are easy for any center of care."

The company has partnered with five organizations so far: Home Instead, a senior care organziation; Midmark, developer of medical products; TriHealth, a health system; Berger Community Hospital; and AvantGuard Monitoring, an alarm monitoring company. Home Instead is the company's newest partnership.
