Digital health and fitness company WHOOP announced the acquisition of sports technology startup PUSH Thursday in an undisclosed cash and stock transaction.
The news comes days after WHOOP said it had secured $200 million in Series F funding, boosting its valuation to $3.6 billion.
WHOOP pairs a wearable that can monitor sleep, body strain and recovery metrics with membership service to provide coaching and community support.
PUSH uses wearable sensors that can be placed in multiple places on the body to help athletes and their trainers quantify weightlifting performance.
WHOOP said the addition of PUSH to its platform will create a “more enhanced and robust system of hardware, software and analytics” for users to get data on fitness and health.
"Many of the members and organizations we serve have long asked for additional insight into the physiological impact of weightlifting and functional fitness," Will Ahmed, WHOOP founder and CEO, said in a statement.
"The integration of PUSH's industry-leading strength-training technology into our platform will allow WHOOP to provide even deeper insight into how these activities impact the human body."
WHY IT MATTERS
WHOOP joined the unicorn club in October 2020 following a $100 million Series E raise.
In January, the PGA chose WHOOP as its official fitness wearable for the PGA tour and PGA tour champions.
THE LARGER TREND
The market for wearable tech is expanding. According to a report by the Consumer Technology Association, the wearables market is expected to generate a record-breaking $487 billion in revenue this year.
“The pandemic strengthened consumers’ relationship with technology forever,” Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the CTA, said in a statement in late July. “From working to learning, staying connected with loved ones and taking care of our health, tech played a crucial role in improving our lives.”
There are plenty of big players in the space too. There are rumors Apple is looking to add blood pressure tracking to its smartwatches. Fitbit and Samsung recently announced new versions of their smartwatches, while Garmin updated its Forerunner smartwatches to include VO2 Max capabilities in June.
